ARTIST STATEMENT
My artistic interests lie somewhere between the worlds of Fine Art and
Fine Craft. I am interested in the oral traditions that encompass craft
art and strive to incorporate that kind of environment into my own artistic
activities, exhibition and otherwise.
Appropriately, my art is about communication, about a conversation between
myself and the art, myself and the audience, the audience and the art.
I am very interested in the interactions between different people and
the sense of community that inevitably follows an open and active dialogue.
This is not to say that I hold my fine art education in disregard. The
respect I have for my formal art education is equal to my respect of
a craft-centered exploration. It is important that I understand both
histories and disciplines because ultimately my work is conveniently
neither craft nor fine art, but some blending of the two. I study each
art realm equally and am just as interested in the urban contemporary
gallery scene as I am the rural traditional craft guild’s quilt show,
not to mention everything in between. I live in both worlds and believe
my work is a reflection of that duality. |
